ADAM’S APPLES – Now Showing
Sentenced to community service at a church, Adam, a neo-nazi, is warmly welcomed by the vicar Ivan. Although Adam is clearly beyond redemption, Ivan encourages him to choose a goal for his time there. Adam dismissively replies that he will bake an apple pie, so Ivan assigns him the task of nurturing the church’s lone apple tree. The tree is subsequently attacked by all manner of natural and unnatural forces until it is clear the tree has become the battleground for the forces of good and evil.
This glib parable of religion and human nature is typical of filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen, and is played out with wit and sophistication by a deadpan cast that includes Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, After the Wedding). The supporting cast are equally brilliant in portraying the Arab who routinely robs gas stations, a chubby former tennis pro, and a sex addict.
A wickedly hilarious film.
Rated R16 Contains violence and offensive language. Runs 94 minutes.
