The NZ International Film Festival (NZFF) is a much anticipated
highlight of the year for film lovers, providing a refreshing burst of
award winning films from around the globe. NZFF broadens our cinematic
experience by providing diversity of subject matter while also delving
into the shelves of history to remind us how things got the way they
are.
Three of the finest filmmakers who regularly make appearances in NZFF
are highlighted in the “Masters” section of the program this year. They
are Claire Denis (35 Shots of Rum), Catherine Breillat (Bluebeard) and
Agnes Varda (The Beaches of Agnes) and their latest films will grace our
screen here at the Academy:
Bluebeard - 8:45pm Fri 17 July, 2:15pm Sat 18 July, 8:30pm Tue 21 July
& 2:15pm Wed 22 July
35 Shots of Rum - 3:15pm Sat 25 July & 5pm Sun 26 July
The Beaches of Agnes - 6:15pm Fri 10 July, 11:30am Mon 13 July, 4pm
Tue 14 July & 6:15pm Wed 15 July
The Academy is proud to be the host venue for the Barry Barclay retrospective, including the World Premiere of Graeme Tuckett’s documentary on the man, The Camera on the Shore. Don’t miss this opportunity to reflect on the work of this salient storyteller. The “Tangata Whenua” series illuminates Barclay's characteristic respect for his subjects and inclusive shooting style which allows a story to unfold in an absorbing and vital manner rather than be captured and killed.
In a homage to more great artists (not just filmmakers!), we are also the primary location for the Portrait of the Artist section of the NZFF program. This collection includes films about an architectural photographer, an art-dealer and a sculptural artist. Shuffle through the lives and minds of some fascinating artists, served up to you in comfort and style at the Academy.
